I have loved Keith Haring's art long before I understood anything about art. Now an art historian, I still deeply love his art, wonder at his creativity, and his generosity. In Paris's children's hospital, he painted a large work, for free, of course, to alleviate the children's pain and anguish. What a guy.

I love this line from Keith Haring's notes: "The world is waiting for the things and I am the only one who can bring them these things." What would my life be like if I started every day with that attitude?

Do you think the documentary would be OK to watch with kids? I love his surety and zaniness. It's a childlike combination. I hope my kids keep that spirit themselves.

I think so! And Haring is so great for kids! He was definitely a vital part of my education growing up.

Thanks for the link to the film. I’m not an opb member so can’t watch it there, but I found it at my local library (dvd and steeaming) so that might be an option to watch it

Thank you so much for this lovely, thoughtful piece about our very special hometown artist. I never got to meet him, but his family is wonderful. Kind, generous, and community oriented, just like he was. I appreciate your comments about graffiti, too!

Until this essay, I had never read about or seen graffiti in a way that appealed to my taste. However, reading about Haring's art, I kept thinking that behind what others might perceive as “shallow street art” (not talking about myself) is someone who thinks and feels so deeply that you can’t help but relate.

Every so often, for no apparent reason, I'll stop and say to myself, "I wish Keith Haring were still alive." Great post, as always. One of the things I love about your blog, and that sets you apart from other bloggers, is that you always go a little deeper and get to the root of things.
