I have been QUITE ASLEEP AT THE SWITCH ! I've become so DIGITIZED that I sent out Christmas EMAILS. EMAILS ! ( it bore repeating & emphasis, methinks ). I wanted to keep SOME THINGS *Non - digital* It's Sisyphean !
I often think of the Sisyphean nature of writing about hand-written notes on a DIGITAL platform. 😂 Since starting Noted, I've spent way more time online than I ever have before. I'm not complaining; it's just made me more appreciative of the non-digital, pen-and-paper moments in my life.
Your readers are as creative with their journals as you are with your words, Jillian, especially the way you captured the feeling of digital disconnection: “increasingly unhooked from the earth.”
Thanks for showcasing these artists and may 2025 be better than we think.
Oh, I love this so much. My eyes could not have been boring into the images on the screen any harder, haha. I love that there are people out there using their journals/notebooks this way, and I love seeing what they're doing in their pages. For me it's deeply energizing stuff. Yesterday I was inspired by Kelcey Ervick's The Habit of Art post about New year's imperatives, and today it's this post, which speaks to me very directly. Which in turn makes me so happy to be on Substack, and to have found the people and publications I've found. Thanks Jillian!
Thank you for sharing these! I definitely need to give myself permission to include ephemera and paint in my journals. I've been so focused on keeping the drawings pristine that it's been really limiting. These examples are great!
My approach is pretty simple, just a daily journal. Fountain pen in a nice Clairefontaine notebook. Mostly just a 'to do' list at the start of the day, and a 'done' list at the end. The lists do manage to overlap. I need to focus better on one detail still, daily means every day, not trying to enter four at a time after the fact.
This is so brilliant!!! who would have thought of a list of bullet pointed mundane thoughts. How the normal suddenly becomes exalted just by listing with a black dot! Love seeing these ideas.
I loved this...Robert Shepherd's was my favorite, but I took a little inspiration from everyone here...so cool and interesting! When I write in my journals I draw colorful borders, glue magazine pictures and little articles on the pages, use stickers, pressed flowers from my garden...whatever appeals to me at that moment. Thanks for sharing;this started my New Year off right...
I love Hilary's lists! I wonder if she writes the list at the end of the day or as things happen throughout the day. I'd like to try this one day and since I'm trying to write more in French, it may be useful on days where I feel that writing paragraphs is too much.
Thanks for this great article! The simple bullet journal approach of Hilary inspired me (who has never journaled) to build my own online version, since I'm on a computer all day. I've added features like auto-tagging and emoji's for each entry, and I even am using AI to produce a daily summary of the journal contents, including generating an image that represents highlights from the day. Thanks for the inspiration and examples. A screen shot of the little app I build is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ynuSH7ut687flkYU1jV8OPj93f0RkmJM/view?usp=sharing
In the past I've tried to get fancy - sticking or taping things to my notebook, doodling, coloring or trying to divide my pages in fancy ways... But in the end for me it's just a mess of to dos, meetings and random thoughts that seems to work. Still, I honor those who can manage to create these beautiful notebooks.
So honored to see a few of my pages here, Jillian. Thank you! I need to get back at it…(I relate to the above comment about soooo much time spent on digital devices!!!) happy new year 😍

just what I needed on a day when no words seem to come to the page - thank you!
I've been having lots of those days lately! Something about the end of December always seems to make me to slow down.
Omg I want to dive into that book.of squares!! Also, I need to start naming my notebooks.
Yes and yes!

Ahhhh THANK YOU SO MUCH for including me and my mapped moments, dear Jillian!! I just mapped a moment from my walk in le Marais today 🤗

Putting watercolor paper in a notebook — brilliant! I cannot wait to try this. Thank you!
Document a day… I love it so much. Adopting for my 2025 goals.
