This is an epic example of what can blossom from teaching children poetry! I work with a nonprofit and one of our community programs is offering free poetry workshops for schools in low-income areas of LA. It's such underrated but important work! But Tupac is and was just so special in his own right. Thank you for the in-depth exploration. I really enjoy your writing 🌟
Literally one of my favorite human beings who ever graced our planet. Pac's unmistakable passion shines through in these notes. Thank you for sharing and hopefully it brings some clarity to the misunderstood and seemingly contradictory life some felt that he had lived.
count me as one who had judged him for how he died but i have learned much here about how little i knew about the man.....if not for music an activist and still one anyways like Malcom X who hung around with Redd Foxx and had aspirations in comedy but rather was compelled full bore into activism...never seen a rose grow in concrete but worked a nightclub kitchen awhile back and the help would roll joints sitting on the sidewalk over cracks and a seed got in there and was nurtured until it got a few inches high with dirt from vacuuming dance floor and water from discarded drinks and we were gonna call it "disco dust"
I’m new to your Substack and am loving it! Fascinating insights. Have you ever written about your process of researching? I’d be curious to know what that is and how it feels so be on the adventure finding this amazing stuff!
This is a truly wonderful piece, and clearly a labor of love. I am so looking forward to delving even further into it. I'm a huge Tupac fan. Thank you so much!
So incredible!! Love seeing each notebook - including his drawings. Amazing how even at a young age, his unique poetic and activist imprint was already there!

Jillian,
I knew nothing about Tupac except that he was killed by gang violence. So thank you for an introductory education through his notes and music.
That music video was riveting and a powerful statement that equality of opportunity is a myth for so many (something I plan to write about soon.)
His writing looks as if it was INCISED rather than handwriting. Static & dynamic both. Energetic.

You’ve showcased one of my favorite artists in every sense of the word. That found haiku is a gem!

Great summary, he's a milestone in rap, I like his art! He still shines somewhere as a star he was!

While others giggled and joked, I would watch and take notes. Fabulous piece, Jillian.
Astonishing talent for such a young man.
Someone whom I'd never have considered as a note-taker or poet. Very interesting to learn about his process.

Thank you.
Loves this one!
